Final NC Top 50 Standings Posted

Congratulations to our Final Top 50 Wrestlers for the 2009-2010 Season. I (Marty) offer my apologizes for the length of time it took to reconcile the standings. Like last year we had a very tight race. This year six wrestlers were tied for the final slot and the tie breaking criteria was applied to separate them.

Honecker named USA Wrestling’s Southeast Junior Developmental Coach of the Year

Honecker lauded for dedication to county wrestling

Honecker, right, who oversees the J.H. Rose High School wrestling team and the Greenville Wrestling Club, was named USA Wrestling’s Southeast Junior Developmental Coach of the Year in May.

It’s been quite a year already for Scott Honecker.

In February, the J.H. Rose wrestling coach guided Branden Lietz to a state championship in the 4-A, 171-pound weight class, which was the first individual state title for a JHR wrestler in nearly 30 years.

Lietz, who finished his senior year undefeated, has since accepted a scholarship to Appalachian State and received an award as the best wrestler in eastern N.C.

About a month ago, Honecker received some hardware of his own.

Honecker has been named USA Wrestling’s Southeast Junior Developmental Coach of the Year. He was informed of the news on May 27 in a regional wrestling tournament in Atlanta.

“I was flattered,” Honecker said of his initial reaction to the award. “There’s a lot of qualified coaches in the Southeast who would have been deserving of the award, so it obviously feels rewarding.”

Honecker was nominated for the award by North Carolina Amateur Wrestling Association state chairman P.J. Smith.

Each of the nine states in the Southeast region can nominate a candidate. Five coaches were submitted for consideration, but Honecker took the crown.

“He does such a good job with kids of all ages,” NCAWA Director Ed Duncan said of Honecker. “His involvement and success with coaching at the club level and state level led to this award.”

Honecker won the award, in part, because of his success at J.H. Rose, but also because of the growth and success of the Greenville Wrestling Club, which he co-founded four years ago.

The Greenville Wrestling Club, which trains wrestlers as young as five years old, produced three college wrestlers this year. Honecker said watching wrestlers develop into college-caliber athletes is the best part of his job.

“Seeing a kid leave my club program or high school program well equipped to head off to college is so rewarding,” said Honecker, after wrapping up a wrestling camp for the Greenville Wrestling Club at Rose on Thursday afternoon.

Youth in eastern N.C. have historically thrived in baseball and softball, but Honecker said the recent success of area wrestlers has made people notice the sport.

“It’s been tough because the idea of a wrestling club that can serve this whole county is really a novel idea in Greenville,” said Honecker, who added that the club still has plenty of room to grow. “But it’s not a novel idea in the best wrestling areas in the country.”

Honecker devotes his time and focus to the Rampants wrestling program during the school year, but spends most of the summer traveling around the country with the Greenville Wrestling Club.

He said his wrestlers usually take the month of August off.

As for Honecker?

“I don’t take time off,” he said with a grin.

Mat Madness 2010- What a weekend of GREAT WRESTLING!!

WOW! That's a good word to describe Mat Madness 2010. What a weekend of wrestling! Some of the best wrestlers from across North Carolina were on display in Fayetteville!
Friday night kicked off with the Greco-Roman State Championships. 117 wrestlers squared off in some very exciting Greco action! There were plenty of lifts, throws, and tosses to keep fans excited all night long. In the large club division, Greenville Wrestling Club (GWC)edged the Rowan County Wrestling Club (ROCO) to earn top team honors. In the small club division, Western Carolina Wrestling Club (WCW) topped the Copperheads from Union Pines. Overall, over 25 clubs competed in the Greco championships.
Saturday's freestyle was the main event as far as competition went! 208 wrestlers from 41 clubs squared off in some intense battles. Top NC scholastic stars such as Dominic Parisi, Tony DeAngelo, and Kevin Radford were among those who competed. Several weights, such as Junior 189 featured multiple state champions in head to head competition. Arrichion flexed its muscle in the large club competition, easily outdistancing 2nd place Greenville Wrestling Club. Western Carolina Wrestling again topped the Copperheads by a narrow margin in the small club competition.
Sunday was a very special day of wrestling! North Carolina was proud to host its first annual Pinning Down Autism charity wrestling tournament. Officials from both folkstyle and freestyle volunteered their time, Mike Krause of Flowrestling fame drove all the way from Michigan, and wrestlers from across the state wrestled for a great cause on Sunday. Proceeds from the Pinning Down Autism event will go to support teachers across North Carolina working with autistic children. It was a great way to cap off the weekend!
A huge thanks to Team Rhino LLC and Fayetteville for being excellent "hosts" for this year's event! Also thanks to all the officials and table volunteers who made competition possible. And a very special thanks to all the club coaches who brought their wrestlers to this year's tournament! Finally, thanks to all the wrestlers who provided us with so much excitement! Its always fun to be surrounded by winners and champs, and you guys certainly are North Carolina's BEST! Best of luck to everyone who will be moving on to SE Regionals and National Competitions this summer!
Next up here in North Carolina will be the State Beach Wrestling Championships set for June 19 in Carolina Beach! If you missed this event last year, it was the biggest party of the year and you WON'T want to miss it again this year! SEE YOU ON THE BEACH!
